South Central Regional Champions!

Melee beat Washington University WuWu in ultimate point to win regionals!

Saturday, we went 4-1 in pool play, losing to WuWu after going down in the first half.  The morning was chilly and the wind picked up later in the day, but overall the weather was pretty nice.

Sunday morning we beat Kansas Betty in quarters and faced Texas A&M Stacked in semis.  We were able to bring our sideline and energy level up to win in semis and carry that into our finals game against WuWu. We took an early lead 4-1. Wu fought hard and we were up 8-6 at half. They tied it up coming out of half and the game was close to the end, with Wu taking a 2 point lead close to the end of the game. Kami Groom played amazingly and it’s unfortunate that our region only had one bid, because WuWu would challenge many of the teams we’ll be seeing in a month.

Final score 15-14 Texas.

Melee played great this weekend, working up the field over and over again and minimizing the number of turns on offense.  Superb playing by each and every player, many huge plays that helped us win finals and a truly awesome team sideline.

Thanks to each and every team and person on our sideline supporting us in the finals game. It was really encouraging to have so much regional support from both in and out of Texas. Also, a big shoutout to everyone rooting for us who wasn’t able to be in CO with us! Thank you Markham and roommates for housing us.

Colorado, we’ll be back in a month!

And the series begins…

Melee went 4-0 this weekend to win the Texas Conference Championships! We will be heading to Ft. Collins, CO this weekend for South Central Regionals.

Mayhem finished sixth overall. Great playing everyone!

We faced some strong winds Saturday and won a close first game against UNT Envy. Next we played Mayhem, led largely by freshman Kelly LaVine and some strong cutting and defense by freshman Lauren McKenna. Our last pool play game was against Texas State.

Sunday morning we faced Texas A&M in finals. We started out trading points early on, but then were able to pull ahead and keep our lead for a final score of 14-9.

Pumped for regionals!

Music City Mash-Up recap

Melee placed 5th overall at Music City Mash-Up, winning in universe point against Wisconsin Bella Donna.

Six of us pulled up to the fields straight from Austin, TX to play the first game of the tournament against UNC-W. Unfortunately, our team played poorly and lost 8-13.

Our next game was against Iowa State. The game stayed fairly close throughout. We ended up losing 11-13.

Our last pool play game was against Bella Donna. They scored the first point and took half. The game was close throughout until the end when we went on a 4 point run for the win. 13-9.

The last game of the day was against Yale in a crossover game. We won 13-5.

We played Iowa in the morning, staying up or tied the whole game until the end when Iowa pulled ahead winning 12-10. We played Rice next, winning 15-4. Then a re-match against Wisconsin gave us another close game as we won by one after losing a big early lead.

Overall Melee showed a lot of strength, despite not playing our best throughout the tournament. Our next tournament is 2 weekends from now where we will see a lot of challenging competition. I’m excited to see where we’re headed with our team this year!

Updating the roster page

Currently working on updating the roster page. Melee’s information should be up-to-date now, but still working on Mayhem’s. Looking at how many new players Mayhem’s gained this semester makes me so happy :) . And it’s so great to have so many young players. Melee is so old, we will need younger players to step up and fill in roles as the rest of us graduate.

Next week we have minicamp. More updates on that as we find out more.

Presidents’ Day Recap

Melee broke seed by 4, finishing 9th overall this weekend.  Check out Score Reporter for results.

Saturday we started out with a win against Humboldt State, breaking seed. We played UCSB next, falling behind as they went on a 6 point run. We returned a 3 point run, but struggled to score in the endzone, losing 15-8. We were able to finish the day strong by defeating Claremont and UCLA, the one seed in our pool. Because of point differences, we finished 3rd in our pool.

Sunday we started out playing Colorado, a big regional competitor. We came out wanting to avenge last year’s regional loss and took half 8-2. Our play didn’t let up the second half as we won 15-5. Next, we played UCSD Psychos in a windy game. Both teams ran hard and the game was close at half, but we closed out the second half, winning 13-5 in hard cap. Our next game was a crossover game for the championship bracket against Sonoma State. Sonoma had a good run, taking an early lead. They were able to hold onto the lead as we fought to close the gap. We lost the game in hard cap, scoring the last point to lose by one.

Monday morning we faced Humboldt State again. They scored quickly to take the lead, but we took the lead after tying the score at 3s and never looked back. 15-9 Texas. For our final game we played Carleton College. It was an aggressive, physical game that stayed close throughout. We won in hard cap 12-9. Our defense and sideline proved crucial in our final game.

Throughout the tournament Melee kept our heads up and played hard, regardless of who we were playing or the score. Our positive attitude and confidence in each other as teammates and friends enabled us to have the strongest showing at Presday in years. We are excited to see how much further we will progress throughout the season, with two more pre-series tournaments to look forward to.

A big thanks to all of our supporters!
